INTERESTING FACTS
Designed primarily by Edmund Blacket on foundations laid by James Hume, the cathedral was built from 1837 to 1868, and was ready for services and consecrated in 1868, making it the oldest cathedral in Australia — St Andrew's Cathedral is of historic significance as the place of the first cathedral to be commenced in Australia.
When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II last came to Sydney (2006) the church held a very special service in her honour to commemorate Commonwealth Day.
St Andrew's Cathedral is one of the major Gothic buildings of Sydney and even though small in comparison to many Cathedrals is well executed showing the hand of architect Blacket.
The Foundation Plaques, the organ which was originally built in 1866, the lectern (the eagle is a symbol of St John), the font, a gift received in 1868, the tiles and marble floors, mostly still the original and laid between 1862 to 1868.
