Cathedral of St. Peter
The church was originally built in 1867 as the parish church of St. Vincent de Paul. In 1883–1884, the church was remodeled and embellished, and its name changed to the Cathedral of St. Peter. In 1976, the cathedral complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cathedral is located at 315 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503.
The focal point of the interior is the reproduction of Raphael’s “Transfiguration” directly above the Bishop’s Chair (cathedra). The painting presents Christ’s manifestation to His apostles James, John and Peter, the patron saint of the Cathedral Church. The original work of art is in the Vatican Museum. The Casavant Frères Opus 3414 is an organ built in 1979 for St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
The stained glass windows now found in the cathedral date from the alterations begun in 1883. Much of this work can be attributed to the architect Edwin Forrest Durang and later to the German designer Frank Mayer.
