Sacred Heart cornerstone was laid November 15, 1896. Saint Dominic foundation stone was laid on the corner lot on State Street, June 13, 1828.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Sacred Heart was one of the first houses of worship in the US to utilize steel frame construction, so no sight lines are blocked by supporting columns inside the church.

  • Sacred Heart became the third parish in Portland, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception having been founded in 1875.

  • After a year of devoted effort the foundation stone was laid on the corner lot on State Street, June 13, 1828. St. Dominic Church became the first Catholic Church in Portland.
