Sacred Heart cornerstone was laid November 15, 1896. Saint Dominic foundation stone was laid on the corner lot on State Street, June 13, 1828.

INTERESTING FACTS
Sacred Heart was one of the first houses of worship in the US to utilize steel frame construction, so no sight lines are blocked by supporting columns inside the church.
Sacred Heart became the third parish in Portland, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception having been founded in 1875.
After a year of devoted effort the foundation stone was laid on the corner lot on State Street, June 13, 1828. St. Dominic Church became the first Catholic Church in Portland.
