Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception

The Cathedral at 125 Eagle Street, Albany, NY 12202, is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, covering 14 counties and is the second-oldest cathedral in New York state. It features the "Cathedra," the Bishop’s Chair, which symbolizes his teaching role as the Chief Pastor. Important events throughout the year include Christmas Midnight Mass, Holy Week services, Easter celebrations, the Rite of Election, Chrism Mass, and ordinations of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons. The Cathedral is a treasured place for the around 400,000 Catholics in the Diocese of Albany.

The cathedral hosts events such as Christmas Midnight Mass, Holy Week, Easter, and ordinations. In 1986, it held the first service of forgiveness between Catholics and Jews on Palm Sunday.

The Cathedral's tall north and south spires were built about twenty-five years apart. The north spire was finished in 1862, and the south spire was built in 1888. Bishop McCloskey blessed the Cathedral's bells on November 16, 1862.

The choir stalls were carved in Belgium in 1894.

The Lady Window, depicting the Virgin Mary's life, was imported from England. Designed by H.W. Ackroyd and created by William Wailes in a 14th-century style, the other stained glass windows also came from Birmingham, England.

The high pulpit was carved of Dutch oak.
